Aim for two brushing sessions each day

The general recommendation is to brush with fluoride toothpaste twice daily for about two minutes each time. Make one session the last thing before bed and choose another convenient time during the day. Brushing is about regularly removing plaque, not simply making your mouth feel fresh.

Make those two minutes count

Work around the mouth in a consistent order, cleaning the outer, inner and chewing surfaces. Brush gently along the gumline; more pressure does not mean better cleaning. Afterwards, spit out excess toothpaste and avoid rinsing straight away so the fluoride can remain on your teeth.

Is brushing enough on its own?

No. Clean between your teeth every day with an appropriate floss or interdental brush as well. If bleeding, sensitivity or bad breath persists, have the cause assessed rather than simply brushing more often. Children and people who need assistance may require a different approach and support with technique.
