Choose for comfort and control

A soft-bristled brush with a small head that comfortably reaches your teeth is a useful starting point for most adults. Both manual and powered brushes can work effectively with the right technique. A powered model may feel easier if hand movement or pressure control is difficult, but the product alone does not replace careful cleaning.

Check the toothpaste label

For adults, a daily toothpaste containing around 1,350–1,500 ppm fluoride is generally appropriate. Check the packaging rather than relying on flavour or marketing. Ask about particular products if you have sensitivity, dry mouth or a high risk of decay. Do not start prescription-strength fluoride toothpaste without professional advice. Children's product choice and toothpaste amounts need age-specific guidance.

Look after the brush

Replace your brush or head about every three to four months, or sooner when the bristles become frayed. If your gums bleed, have the cause assessed instead of switching to harder bristles. Whitening toothpaste is not an automatic answer to staining, decay or gum problems either.
