Clean between your teeth every day
A practical general goal is to clean between your teeth once a day. A toothbrush cannot reach all of these surfaces. Floss is not only for removing trapped food: it also helps remove plaque along the sides of teeth and near the gumline. Choose a regular time that you can maintain.
Keep the technique gentle
Guide floss slowly between the teeth instead of snapping it into the gum. Curve it into a C-shape against one tooth and gently move it up and down. Clean both tooth surfaces within each space. If you are new to flossing, ask a dental professional to demonstrate the technique.
Is floss the right tool for everyone?
The size of the spaces, bridges, implants and orthodontic appliances can affect the choice. An appropriately sized interdental brush may suit some areas better; it should not be forced into a tight space. Persistent bleeding, pain or floss repeatedly catching and shredding in one place warrants assessment. Flossing does not replace brushing.
